今年不缺咬人的昆虫。我的前臂被抓伤了，我的肩膀和背部都被咬伤了。我不知道为什么在昆虫总数下降的情况下，我们有这么多健康的昆虫。也许是因为我们使用的化学药品很少，而且山谷里有一条河和很多树。一旦运来一车干草，我就忍不住想跳进伦河来缓解一下瘙痒——直到我检查了污水被排放到上游的频率。这就打消了任何关于夜间游泳的想法。
对我来说，农场的季节变化得如此之快是不可思议的，现在我已经50多岁了。学校的学期过去常常是漫长的，但现在我们似乎从一个永远潮湿的冬天出来，直接进入产羔阶段——然后我们突然等待干燥的日子来晒干草，然后清理草地，让奶牛可以回家产犊。
睡前最后一杯。我儿子从拖拉机上爬下来，准备把麦捆扔上去，我上了驾驶室。我把拖拉机开到低档，以步行的速度行驶在剩下的捆之间，他把它们扔到拖车上堆起来。不过，我们在邻近田地里堆的大圆捆必须留在外面，只能放几天降温——我们可不想让谷仓着火。
