Angela Rayner gives Rishi Sunak brutal three-word nickname as she rips into Tory housing failure

Angela Rayner has branded Rishi Sunak a "pint-sized loser" as she ripped into the Tories' housing failures.

The Deputy Labour leader, who stood in for Keir Starmer at PMQs, ripped into Deputy PM Oliver Dowden for having supported Mr Sunak's bid to become PM.

In a fiery exchange, Ms Rayner said she had read "with interest" reports that Mr Dowden has been urging Mr Sunak to call a general election "because he's worried they might get wiped out", before adding: "Has he finally realised that when he stabbed Boris Johnson in the back to get his mate into No10, he was ditching their biggest vote winner for a pint-sized loser?"

Mr Dowden was a key supporter during Mr Sunak's bid to become Tory leader in 2022, having resigned as Tory Party co-chair when Boris Johnson was Prime Minister. But Ms Rayner hit out at him having supported Mr Sunak, as she said the Tories were in a "deep state of sewage".

The Shadow Housing Secretary accused the Tories of being "obsessed" with her living arrangements, referring to a row over the sale of her house in 2015. Police are looking into allegations, following lobbying by Tory MP James Daly. They include claims she broke electoral law by saying her principal residence was a different house to the one she was actually living in.

Speaking about the Tories, she said: "After 14 years, they've failed renters, leaseholders and mortgage-holders." She added: "Instead of obsessing over my house, when will he get a grip and show the same obsession with ending no-fault evictions?"

Ms Rayner said more than 16,000 families across the UK face losing their homes due to Liz Truss's disastrous mini-budget, adding: "Meanwhile, the former prime minister parades around the world in a twisted victory lap promoting a new book, saying that the mini-budget was her proudest moment."

Replying to her attacks, Mr Dowden said: “It is a pleasure to have another exchange with the right honourable lady in this House, our fifth in 12 months. Any more of these and she will be claiming it as her principal residence.”

He defended attacks on the Renters Reform Bill, which will return to the Commons on Wednesday afternoon, saying: “The right honourable lady is talking about legislation introduced by this Government which the party opposite totally failed to introduce in their entire time in office.“

Housing Secretary Michael Gove has abandoned his promise that no-fault evictions for renters will be banned before the general election. Mr Gove only said he "hopes" it will become law before Britain heads to the polls. No-fault evictions - or Section 21 notices - allow landlords to evict tenants on a whim and without reason and many charities have blamed them for increased levels of homelessness.
